According to the latest report by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is preparing to produce an AirPods with a camera. It is said that the company will produce an AirPods with a camera module by 2026. News that the company would produce AirPods with cameras also came to the fore in February.
According to Kuo; The new AirPods models will feature an infrared camera similar to the one used as part of the Face ID module on the iPhone and iPad. Apple’s goal is said to be for camera-equipped AirPods to be integrated with the Vision Pro and future Apple Vision headphones.
Kuo’s report states: “The new AirPods are expected to be used with Vision Pro and future Apple headphones to enhance the spatial audio user experience and strengthen the spatial computing ecosystem. “For example, when a user is watching a video with Vision Pro and wearing these new AirPods, if users turn their head to look in a particular direction, the audio source in that direction can be highlighted to enhance the spatial audio/computing experience.”
Additionally, the report states that the IR camera on AirPods can detect environmental image changes and “potentially enable mid-air motion control to improve human-device interaction.”
Kuo states that Foxconn is the new product introduction (NPI) supplier of the IR camera to be used with AirPods. It is said that Foxconn has an annual capacity plan of 18-20 million units, or approximately 10 million pairs of AirPods.
Apple is developing products other than AirPods with cameras
In February, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman shared the information that AirPods with cameras were just one of the wearable form factor ideas Apple was exploring. The company is also working on future versions of the Apple Watch, as well as smart glasses similar to the Meta Ray-Ban, as well as a smart ring.
