Meta decided to change artificial intelligence tags

Meta is updating its “Made with Artificial Intelligence” labels after complaints from photographers. The company stated that the labels would be changed to “AI knowledge” and that current labels do not always align with people’s expectations and do not provide enough context.

Earlier this year, Meta introduced “Made with AI” labels following criticism from the Oversight Board over its “manipulated media” policy. Meta, like many of its rivals, said it would rely on “industry-standard” signals to determine whether an image was created using artificial intelligence. However, photographers soon realized that Facebook and Instagram were also applying this label to images that were not made using AI. According to tests conducted by PetaPixel, even a small edit made with Adobe’s generative fill tool in Photoshop would trigger this tag. People were also very disturbed by this situation. While Meta didn’t directly name Photoshop in its update, it did acknowledge that content containing some minor AI edits triggered the “Made with AI” tag. In their app, they are updating the “Made with Artificial Intelligence” tag to “AI information” and more information can be obtained by clicking on this tag. The new “AI information” labels will not include any details about what AI tools the image was created using. A Meta spokesperson confirmed that the context menu that opens when users click on the tag will remain the same and will contain information about generative AI in general.
