BMW introduced its new humanoid robots, Figure 02, which are planned to be used in the production process.
New humanoid model produced by Californian technology company Figure Figure 02started to be tested by BMW. The robot used to perform some tasks at the Spartanburg assembly plant appears to have passed the test during its test drive.
The German automotive giant is working on the potential use of the robot in production. According to Figure, this robot is currently available for purchase and use It is the most advanced humanoid robot. Moreover, this robot is not a one-time production prototype.
Robot can be used in new generation factories
BMWrecently tested Figure 02 and announced that these tests were successful, but it is unlikely that we will see the robot on production lines anytime soon. Because the robot is still in the development and evaluation phase. BMW also states that there are no robots currently working at the facility in Spartanburg and that they do not have a timeline for introducing robots.
Member of the Board of Directors of BMW Production Milan Nedeljkovic, “The developments in the field of robotics are very promising. With an early test operation, we are identifying possible applications in production for humanoid robots. We want to support this technology from development to the industrial stage.” he said.
During the last evaluation, Figure 02’ye I was given the task of placing specific sheet metal parts into fixtures. Apart from monitoring the robot’s work, BMW also took note of how it interacts with its environment. The work was designed to require precision and demonstrate the robot’s ability to be both precise and gentle. Both BMW and Figure think the robot could serve in roles that would be “ergonomically uncomfortable and tiring” and could have a place in the iFactory concept.
