Arm officially announced its next-generation CPU and GPU designs: Cortex-X925 CPU and Immortalis G925 GPU. These new designs will replace the existing Cortex-X4 and Immortalis G720, which are currently also used in the MediaTek Dimensity 9300 chipset, providing significant improvements in performance and efficiency, pushing the boundaries of performance in flagship smartphones.
Cortex-X925 offers a 36 percent increase in single-core performance compared to its predecessor, X4. This improvement is especially evident in Geekbench tests and increases the overall speed of the devices. Additionally, a 41 percent improvement is achieved in AI workloads, while up to 3MB of dedicated L2 cache also contributes to performance.
Introduced with the new generation Cortex-X925 CPU, Cortex-A725 offers 35 percent better performance efficiency compared to the previous generation A720. Cortex-A520 stands out with a 15 percent increase in energy efficiency. These new microarchitectures enable devices to operate faster and consume less energy.
Immortalis G925 GPU features
The Immortalis G925 GPU offers 37 percent faster performance in graphics applications than the previous generation G720. It provides a 52 percent improvement in ray tracing performance, making it possible to render more complex objects. Additionally, artificial intelligence and machine learning deliver a 34 percent improvement in workloads while reducing energy consumption by 30 percent.
Arm offers optimized layouts of new CPU and GPU designs, providing device manufacturers with easy integration. This innovation enables device manufacturers to incorporate new designs into their chipsets more quickly and efficiently. Thus, the aim is to reach consumers faster by shortening the time to market.
Lumen ray tracing technology in Unreal Engine is now compatible with the Immortalis GPU. While this development opens new doors for mobile game developers, it remains a matter of curiosity how ray tracing techniques will perform on mobile devices. Andy Craigen states that this technology requires significant power and energy consumption on the mobile system.
Release date of new devices with Arm v9 architecture
Arm made statements about when devices using new generation GPUs will be released. Currently, iQOO Neo 9pro uses Dimensity 9300 while Xiaomi 14 series and OnePlus 12 series use Cortex-X4 and Cortex-A720 within Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Arm said it expects new phones to be further developed with new core designs. These phones will start arriving by the end of 2024. However, it is not yet clear what these models are.
MediaTek announced that it will support Cortex-X925 CPU and Immortalis G925 GPU in the new generation chipset Dimensity 9400. This statement indicates that a new Vivo or Oppo device may be released at the end of 2024. The use of these new designs from Arm in current generation devices is expected to increase.
MediaTek’s Dimensity 9200 chip attracted attention as the first model to use the Immortalis G715 GPU along with Cortex-X4. However, models in which the Cortex CPU is paired with other GPU designs are more widely used. For example, the Exynos 2400 found in the Samsung Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus exemplifies this type of pairing.
