Corning Incorporated launched its new product, Gorilla Glass 7i, designed especially for mid-segment and affordable smartphones. This new version provides better protection against drops and scratches than older Gorilla Glass versions.
Gorilla Glass 7i has been developed to withstand drops from 1 meter high. Corning stated that old versions such as Gorilla Glass 5, released in 2016, were widely used in mid-segment phones and that a more modern solution was needed. While this new glass appeals to budget-friendly phone manufacturers, it also adapts to the high-quality display trend.
According to Corning’s press release, Gorilla Glass 7i offers significant durability improvements. Laboratory tests show that this new glass can withstand a drop from a height of 1 meter onto a hard surface (e.g. asphalt). This is a huge advantage considering that competing aluminosilicate glasses generally fail at lower drop heights (about 0.5 meters or less).
Beyond drop protection, Gorilla Glass 7i has twice the scratch resistance compared to some lithium aluminosilicate coated glass on the market. This appears to be a promising solution for mid-range smartphone manufacturers, offering advanced protection without increasing costs.
Corning’s new Gorilla Glass 7i product stands out as a perfect solution for mid-segment phones. By replacing old glass technologies, it makes phones more durable and more resistant to scratches. This provides a great advantage for both manufacturers and users and raises the quality standards of mid-segment phones.
