With the development of technology, much information of individuals, companies and even governments has been recorded on the internet. Although this situation provides convenience in many areas, it leads to the emergence of some critical data as a result of cyber attacks and data leaks that occur from time to time.
The last of these leaks took place in China. It is reported that nearly 1.5 billion records were compromised in what is considered one of the largest data breaches in history.
More Than One Billion People’s Personal Information May Have Been Exposed
Some researchers from the cybersecurity community called Cybernews recently discovered one of the largest data breaches in history. The analysis revealed the existence of a huge database in China with no security measures. While the database in question contains approximately 1.5 billion records, it hosts important information of many companies such as China’s e-commerce giant JD.com, social media platform Weibo, KFC and shared ride service DiDi.
It is stated that the security gap was closed on January 6, 2025, a few months after experts noticed the database on August 31, 2024 and reported the situation to the authorities. However, it is a matter of curiosity whether the data was seized by malicious hackers in this process, how much of it was exploited, or how many people were affected by this situation.
According to Cybernews’ statement, many personal information such as names, e-mail addresses, usernames, phone numbers, health records, financial information and education-related data of hundreds of millions of people were included in the existing database.
However, experts found that the database was divided into different thematic clusters and the data was classified according to categories. According to investigations, it is reported that the database, which contains separate clusters for health, cryptocurrency, finance, education and automobiles, is a major threat especially to China. Because some clusters are thought to be directly related to the Chinese government. Experts state that this situation may pose a serious risk for China’s national security.
