230 million TL penalty from the Ministry of Commerce to e-commerce companies

The Ministry emphasized that consumers are more vulnerable to abuse in online shopping because they do not have the opportunity to physically see and control the products, and stated that consumers are kept safe with the Distance Contracts Regulation to protect consumers.

What was examined?

In line with consumer applications made to the Ministry of Commerce in 2024; Issues that aggrieved the consumer were examined, especially the issues of order cancellations on the grounds that the products were not in stock, and the issue of refunds for contracts terminated due to reasons such as not delivering the purchased products within the specified period. Within the scope of the audits and examinations carried out, 40 of the 42 e-commerce companies inspected in 2024 of the company An administrative fine of approximately 230 million TL was imposed for practices contrary to the legislation.

In addition, it was stated that the activities of 7 companies were evaluated within the scope of the crime of fraud in the relevant articles of the Turkish Penal Code and were directed to the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, where an investigation report was prepared.
