Adapted from the science-fiction novel The Three-Body Problem by Chinese science-fiction writer Liu Cixin, the series makes some important changes while bringing this award-winning novel to the screen. While criticism of the series in the West generally focuses on these changes and the political correctness of the matter, criticism in China focuses more on the depiction of the Chinese Cultural Revolution in the series.
3 Body Problems Are Compared to the Made in China Version
Particularly in the first scene of the series, showing a brutal execution during the Cultural Revolution seems to have disturbed Chinese viewers. At least the reactions on social media indicate this. Another opinion frequently expressed on China’s social media platforms is that the Chinese-made version released in 2023 is better. This 30-episode Chinese series called Three-Body (San ti) is considered to be a more faithful and better adaptation of the books.
Although Chinese viewers were disturbed by the way the series depicted the Cultural Revolution, Liu Cixin’s novel actually approaches this period in a similar way. It is even known that Liu Cixin wanted to put this execution scene at the beginning of his book, but was persuaded by his editor to place this scene in the middle of the book in order to avoid censorship in China. As a matter of fact, when the English version of the book was published, this scene was moved to the beginning again with the permission of the author.
