In the United States, an amateur collector named Eddie Templeton had an extraordinary coincidence. While exploring the Mississippi wilderness, Templeton came across a remarkable object. A surprisingly well-preserved huge mammoth tusk was found right in the middle of a rock on the banks of the stream. The age of this tooth, which weighs 270 kilograms, has not yet been determined. However, in the tests carried out, it was understood that these belonged to Columbian mammoths.
The find of a mammoth tooth from the Pleistocene period attracted attention
Eddie Templeton said in an interview with a local newspaper, “When I learned that it was not a mastodon but a mammoth, my joy knew no bounds. I never found parts of this animal, although I always hoped. However, this is very rare in our region” he said.
Local geologists, who managed to excavate this remarkable fossil, reported that this type of fossil was encountered for the first time in the Mississippi region. It was stated that the mammoth tusk weighed 270 kilograms and was approximately 2 meters long.
Geologists in the region stated that it is almost impossible to find mammoth fossils in this region. It has been stated that mammoths were very picky eaters and lived in only a few large open grasslands, unlike their relatives, the American mastodons. It was stated that the remains of American mastodons can be found in many places in the Mississippi region.
It is known that the Columbian mammoths, to which the interesting find unearthed in Mississippi belongs, lived during the Pleistocene period. While it is stated that the length of these animals is not more than 4.5 meters, they are said to weigh approximately 10 tons. It is known that these mammoths became extinct due to melting glaciers and human hunting.
