Unstoppable energy consumption with artificial intelligence
Currently worldwide data centers total power 1-2 percentis consuming, but this rate is likely to increase by the end of the decade to 3-4 percent will rise. Today’s data centers are now often built for or optimized for AI workloads. These facilities generally use GPUs that demonstrate strong performance in artificial intelligence workloads.
This number alone means nothing to most people. So let’s put this in context. Annual electricity consumption per household in Turkey is around 4,000 kWh. This stands at 10,700 in the US. So AI GPUs sold in 2023 Approximately 3.5 million in Turkey digit, 1.3 million in the USA of the household It consumes as much electricity as it uses annually.
It should be noted that this only pertains to data center GPUs for 2023, and does not include CPUs or cooling systems in data centers. Taking these into account, we find that servers and data centers built last year require more than 25 GWh of energy per year.
Consumption will increase rapidly
According to the researchers, a single ChatGPT query requires 2.9 watt-hours of electricity, while this figure is 0.3 watt-hours for a Google search. Additionally, the overall increase in AI-driven data center power consumption is estimated to be 200 terawatt-hours per year between 2023 and 2030. By 2028, AI is expected to represent approximately 19 percent of data center power demand. It is estimated that by 2030 the power demand of data centers will exceed 550 terawatt-hours.
