Apple introduced AirPods 4 and USB-C connected AirPods Max last month. The iFixit team examined these new devices by disassembling them. As a result, the new AirPods models do not make any significant improvements in terms of ease of repair. A special device must be used to open the upper part of the small-sized AirPods 4. While this apparatus holds the device steady, the adhesives are loosened with the help of a heat gun.
After this process, the speaker and battery components appear covered with a dense layer of adhesive. Opening the stem of the AirPods 4 is more difficult and a knife must be used to cut the stem. The only difference between AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with active noise cancellation (ANC) is the larger internal microphone.
Opening the charging box is also quite troublesome. Intense heat and vigorous lifting are required to reach the internal components. The 345 mAh battery inside the charging box is also difficult to remove because it does not come with pull tabs. Due to these factors, the iFixit team gave the AirPods 4 a provisional repairability score of 0 out of 10.
New AirPods Max are easier to repair than AirPods 4 models
Repairing the new AirPods Max with USB-C connection is a little easier. However, many components still require careful heating and removal. Reaching the internal components, they appear to be almost identical to the first generation AirPods Max; The only difference is that more glue is used and there is a USB-C charging port instead of a Lightning port.
AirPods Max with USB-C connection received a provisional repairability score of 6 out of 10 from iFixit.
