Group1 introduced the world’s first 18650 potassium-ion battery, breaking new ground in energy storage technology. This innovation will be a sustainable, cost-effective and high-performance alternative to traditional lithium-ion batteries. Here are all the capabilities of the revolutionary battery…
World’s first 18650 potassium-ion battery could replace lithium-ion batteries
The potassium-ion battery was designed in the widely used 18650 cylindrical form factor. So, the diameter of the battery 18mmthe length is 65mm. Group1 CEO Alexander Girau stated that this battery is the result of years of research and product development. Extensive tests have revealed that the battery not only meets expectations but also provides superior performance in many areas.
The battery can maintain its capacity even after many charge and discharge cycles, offering a high cycle life. This feature is especially critical for applications that require long-lasting batteries, such as electric vehicles. Additionally, thanks to its strong discharge performance, it can effectively provide power when needed.
Its potassium-ion battery operates at a nominal voltage of 3.7V and is compatible with existing electronic devices and systems. It also shows the potential to reach gravimetric energy density of 160-180Wh/kg, which is on par with lithium iron phosphate lithium-ion batteries (LFP-LIB). This high energy density shows that the battery can store a significant amount of energy relative to its mass.
Group1’s new potassium-ion battery can be seamlessly integrated into existing devices and applications because it is designed in the 18650 format, which is widely used in the market. This eliminates the need for costly redesign. Additionally, these new batteries use commercially available components such as graphite anodes, separators, and electrolyte formulations, streamlining the supply chain and increasing domestic production capacities.
This innovation not only replaces lithium-ion batteries, but also offers an attractive alternative to sodium-ion batteries (NIBs), which suffer from cost and efficiency issues. Using Group1’s Crystalnite cathode material, this new battery represents a significant advance in energy storage technologies. It reduces dependence on essential minerals, uses widely accessible ingredients and is presented in a globally recognized format.
The introduction of the world’s first 18650 Potassium-ion battery could be a revolutionary change that has the potential to redefine various industries and promote a more sustainable environment. What are you thinking? You can write your opinions in the comments section below.
