US-based technology giant Amazon is moving its satellite production operations to Turkey. The company, which cooperates with Tezmaksan, which operates in the machine tools sector, plans to completely shift its production processes in the USA and Mexico to Sivas. Tezmaksan has started trial production for Amazon and aims to make the first delivery in the first quarter of 2025. In this context, efforts are continuing to establish a second factory in Sivas.
Tezmaksan CEO Hakan Aydoğdu pointed out Turkey’s advantage in engineering costs and explained the reasons behind Amazon’s decision. Aydoğdu stated that Amazon plans to provide worldwide internet service by placing 1,300 compact satellites just below the stratosphere. In line with this goal, it was stated that the company is evaluating different regions from Europe to China for satellite production. However, factors such as the aging population in Europe and the decreasing interest of young people in the sector, supply problems in China and Mexico’s high production costs made Turkey stand out.
Another factor that influenced Amazon’s choice of Türkiye was Tezmaksan’s knowledge in the field of robotic systems and automation. Aydoğdu stated that low-cost engineering solutions, as well as competence in robotic technologies, play a key role in this process. Thus, Türkiye proved that it is an important player in international competition not only with its economic advantages but also with its technological capabilities.
This investment by Amazon aims to make Turkey’s provinces such as Sivas, Tokat, Yozgat and Kayseri a base in the space industry and aviation sector. Hakan Aydoğdu stated that these provinces aim to work in coordination to turn into an industrial ecosystem like Stuttgart in Germany or Detroit in the USA. In the first stage, nine out of a total of 1,500 parts of a satellite are planned to be produced in Turkey. Some of these parts will be directed to companies in Istanbul and Bursa, and the rest will be directed to other provinces in the region. Thus, Türkiye will become not only a production center but also a technology and innovation center.
Tezmaksan plans to establish a second factory in Sivas on an area of 18 thousand square meters in order to meet the increasing demands. With this new investment, the current area capacity in Demirağ Organized Industrial Zone will increase to 28 thousand square meters. Aydoğdu emphasized that not only satellite parts but also various machines that are not yet produced in Turkey will be produced in this factory. Thus, Sivas aims to become a production center that attracts attention not only at the national but also at the international level.
Hakan Aydoğdu stated that with these investments, a significant contribution was made to Turkey’s aviation history. Acting with the mission of realizing the unfinished dream of Sivas businessman Nuri Demirağ, Aydoğdu stated that he has long-term goals in the space industry. These targets include not only satellite production but also projects to launch rockets into space from Sivas. Aydoğdu stated that they aim to implement this project within 15-20 years and drew attention to Turkey’s rise in the space industry.
