In his announcement on the social media platform X, Elon Musk introduced a new API that opens xAI’s Grok models to developers. This API allows third-party developers to build applications and features using xAI’s Grok language models.
The API includes xAI’s latest multimodal language models, Grok-2 and Grok-2 mini. While these models can be used in various tasks such as generating text and code and summarizing content, they can also produce images with Black Forest Labs’ Flux.1 diffusion model. Additionally, the API can perform real-world tasks by interacting with external tools. For example; It offers functions such as accessing IoT devices or pulling live data.
However, for now the API only offers a model called “grok-beta”. Developers are likely to encounter various bugs with this beta version because The platform is still in beta phase.
xAI aims to compete with rivals like OpenAI through its API. The pricing of Grok-beta is higher compared to OpenAI: 5 dollars is requested for 1 million entry tokens and 15 dollars for exit tokens. These prices are more expensive compared to OpenAI’s GPT-4 model. On the other hand, xAI’s models promise a wide range of uses by offering unique features such as visual content production and interaction with external databases.
The xAI API attracts attention as part of Musk’s goal of strengthening his place in the world of artificial intelligence while offering new opportunities to developers. It remains to be seen over time whether the API will be developed further and how much it will be adopted and used by developers.
The API in question can be tried here.
