Apple is working on a new smart doorbell camera that offers door unlocking with Face ID technology. According to information provided by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in the Power On newsletter, this new device could be released at the end of 2025 at the earliest.
The new doorbell will work similar to the Face ID technology on iPhones and will automatically open the door when the user or another person living in the house looks at the device. It is stated that, just like the biometric login information used in Apple’s other devices, this camera will also have a Secure Enclave chip that processes and stores Face ID information separately from the rest of the system’s hardware. This is seen as an important step for the security of user data.
Gurman states that the device will “most likely” be compatible with existing third-party HomeKit-compatible smart locks, and that Apple may also aim to offer the device as a “complete system from day one” by collaborating with a smart lock manufacturer. It is stated that the camera will be equipped with the Wi-Fi / Bluetooth combination chip called “Proxima”, developed by Apple and claimed to be used in the new generation HomePod Mini and Apple TV models.
Apple will contribute to its Apple Intelligence-centered strategy with the Face ID doorbell
This doorbell camera from Apple is seen as part of the company’s renewed strategies for the smart home ecosystem centered on Apple Intelligence. Within the scope of this strategy, it is also reported that work is being done on a new smart home camera, an Apple branded TV and various smart home screens. One of these displays is described as an iPad-like device that can be magnetically placed on a wall mount or speaker bases. Another screen is designed to be located at the end of a robotic arm connected to a large base.
These investments made by Apple in smart home technologies show that the company aims to increase its competitiveness in this field and plans to take the user experience to a new dimension. However, the release dates and features of the devices in question are not yet certain.
