Apple continues to work at full speed on an iPad-like desktop device where you can manage smart home products, control home security and participate in video calls.
The device, expected to be released in 2026, is said to have a thin robotic arm that moves around a large screen. Described as Apple’s answer to products like the Google Nest Hub and Amazon’s Echo Show, this device will be able to tilt the screen up and down and rotate 360 degrees using actuators. For now, it is planned to work on a side version of iPadOS.
It is said that Apple gave the green light to this device in 2022, but intensified its work after abandoning the multibillion-dollar car project. According to Bloomberg, Apple’s vice president of technology, Kevin Lynch, who managed the automobile project and was responsible for smart watches and health software until recently, is also responsible for the development of the new device.
Hundreds of Apple employees are now said to be working on the desktop system, which the company sees as a way to leverage Apple Intelligence tools. Siri and Apple Intelligence are expected to be the main control methods for the device. Users will be able to turn the screen towards themselves with a voice command. It was reported earlier this year that Apple was planning to enter the personal robotics space, a venture that also includes a desktop device.
However, it is stated that the company has some concerns about whether potential customers will really want this product. At this point, it should be reminded that Apple has already reached a strong base in the tablet market. It is stated that pricing can also affect demand. It is rumored that Apple plans to sell the device for approximately $1000.
Apple aims to expand its product range and increase profits
Bloomberg states that this is one of several devices that Apple is working on as it aims to further diversify its product range and increase its profits. While the iPhone still accounts for about half of Apple’s revenue, sales have remained relatively low in recent quarters. This year’s lineup, expected to arrive in September, is planned to feature relatively modest hardware upgrades, with Apple focusing more on software updates such as Apple Intelligence features.
Other products Apple is said to be working on include smart glasses and AirPods with built-in cameras. Foldable iPhones and iPads are also among the devices in development.
