Apple began paying users for faulty keyboards used in certain MacBook models from 2015 to 2019. It is sending settlement payments to some device owners in the US for MacBook models with butterfly keyboards.
Apple first switched to the butterfly design on MacBook keyboards in 2015. This design, which aims to make the keyboard thinner, caused sticky key problems for many users. A lawsuit initiated in 2018 resulted in Apple paying money to users.
The technology giant first started offering free repair support for button malfunctions and multiple replacement needs. But the class-action lawsuit continued, and a $50 million settlement was ultimately approved earlier this year.
Refunds for users who chose to receive the settlement payment reportedly started arriving this month. It is unclear whether the operations to be carried out in the USA in the first phase will affect users in Europe and Asia. Customers who had to replace their MacBook keyboards two or more times will receive payments of $395. Owners of devices that have had a single replacement will be able to receive up to $125, while those who have had a single button repair will be able to receive up to $50 from Apple.
