Apple set its sights on 2 nm chips produced by TSMC

While Samsung’s eyes are on the Exynos 2500 processor, which will be produced with the 3 nm process, Apple seems to be aiming one step further. Allegedly, Apple is already trying to reach an agreement with TSMC for 2 nm chips.

It is said that Jeff Williams, the operations chief of the Cupertino-based company, went to Taiwan and visited TSMC and held a secret meeting with TSMC President Wei Zhejia. It is stated that at the meeting in question, the development of artificial intelligence chips and Apple’s purchasing of all the first batch of 2 nm chips to be produced by TSMC were discussed.

Apple had made a similar move before. When TSMC started producing 3 nm chips, Apple also stepped in to buy all the first batch chips. The A17 Pro chip used by the company in the iPhone 15 Pro was also produced with TSMC’s 3 nm technology. The M4 chip that the company placed in the new iPad Pro also uses an advanced version of 3 nm technology.

Moving from 3nm to 2nm could improve the performance and efficiency of Apple’s chips. Shrinking chips makes it possible to pack more transistors into a smaller space.

Apple can kill two birds at once by reaching an agreement with TSMC

By making an agreement with TSMC for 2 nm chips, Apple may also make it difficult for its competitors to access this technology. In addition, it can more easily meet the demand for its own products.
