Apple will make iPhone and other devices compatible

The European Union (EU) has made some warnings to make devices such as iPad and iPhone controlled by Apple more compatible. This move by the Commission follows the Digital Markets Act (DMA) process launched in September.

Draft recommendations according to the EU Commission; It includes automatic audio switching, background connection, notifications, data transfer via AirDrop, AirPlay and Wi-Fi sharing. Accordingly, it also addresses a wide range of operability features offered by Apple, such as automatic Wi-Fi connection.

These decisions actually cover people who use iPhones and different brand accessories. For example, Garmin smart watch users sued the company, saying that they could not send quick responses because of the iPhone. The EU’s goal will be to increase interoperability within the Apple ecosystem.

However, Apple has expressed concerns about the DMA’s interoperability mandates. Accordingly, he warned of “almost impossible to eliminate” security risks. The company criticized “data-hungry companies” like Meta and said it could not fulfill the requests.

Meta responded to Apple’s claims and stated that it was acting anti-competitively. “What Apple is actually saying is that they don’t believe in interoperability,” a company spokesperson said. “Every time Apple is criticized for anti-competitive behavior, they defend themselves on privacy grounds that have no basis in reality,” he said.

The EU Commission is seeking feedback from companies seeking interoperability with Apple by 2025. The final and legally binding measures to be applied to the technology giant are expected to be completed before March.

If Apple does not comply with these decisions, the EU is expected to launch a formal investigation next year. It could also impose fines of up to 10 percent of its global annual sales.
