A site targeting Apple users stole critical information of its visitors with a very simple method.

Beware of Fake Homebrew Sites Targeting MacOS Users

For those who don’t know, Homebrew is a tool used to install programs on MacOS. It allows you to easily download and install programs via the terminal. The official site is brew.sh. However, Mac users who recently clicked on this site fell victim to a very simple but effective scam.

Cybercriminals, who created a site with an extra letter “e” added to brew.sh, placed their site named “brewe” at the top of the search results by advertising it on Google and managed to attract users with a name and design that imitated the original brew site.

The worst part of brewe, which seems like a normal site at first glance, is that it cannot be noticed until it is too late for users who are not overly careful. Hackers managed to spread the malware called AMOS through this site.

What is AMOS?

AMOS (Atomic) is a malware that specifically targets sensitive data such as passwords, browser history and cryptocurrency information. This tool is sold by hackers with a monthly subscription of $1,000. Security researchers have been pointing out the dangers of this software for months. Homebrew Project Leader Mike McQuaid stated that the attack has now been stopped, but emphasized that such threats are repeated.

This site appears to have now been removed. However, this happens all the time and Google continues to take money from these scammers. We hope this situation is resolved permanently.

McQuaid also emphasized that particular attention should be paid to lower case letters, and that users should scroll down to make sure it is the official site rather than the ad at the top. Similar methods are used to imitate shopping sites in our country.
