Big breakthrough in technology from Samsung

Samsung Electronics has successfully built the industry’s first Compute Express Link (CXL) infrastructure certified by Red Hat. This new infrastructure is located at the Samsung Memory Research Center in South Korea and allows Samsung to directly validate CXL-related products, hardware and software components.

Thanks to this verification process, Samsung’s products can be immediately submitted for registration with Red Hat, speeding up product development for Samsung and its customers. Using this infrastructure, Samsung has successfully validated its first CXL product, the CMM-D. Going forward, the company plans to use this infrastructure to provide customers with customized solutions and optimize products earlier in the development phase.

CXL is a high-speed interconnect standard designed to improve communications between data center components. Using the PCIe interface, it provides lower latency and higher bandwidth compared to traditional standards. This significantly increases the speed, latency and scalability of existing data centers and improves them without significantly increasing costs.

The latest boom in artificial intelligence requires radical changes in server architecture. Data centers are facing new operational challenges due to the massive increase in data processing volume. CXL technology addresses these challenges as a way to more efficiently manage the flow of data within servers.

In December 2023, Samsung collaborated with Red Hat to validate CXL memory operations in a real-world user environment. This partnership enabled Samsung to become the first company to offer a CXL module, open source software, and CXL DRAM that support the CXL 2.0 standard. Samsung has since added Red Hat certified data center solid state drives (SSD) to its product line. This enables customers to build systems with Red Hat certified hardware and reliable Linux support.

Samsung’s CXL infrastructure is seen as a significant step in optimizing data center solutions and accelerating product development cycles. This innovative step reinforces Samsung’s leadership in data center technologies and increases its capacity to provide faster and more efficient solutions to customers.
