Borderlands, which grossed only $8.8 million in the United States in its first weekend at the box office, was able to collect only $7.7 million in the rest of the world and opened with $16.5 million. For a film that spent 115 million dollars on its production alone, this result is simply disastrous.
Borderlands Movie, The Most Failed Game Adaptation of Recent Years
Moreover, it does not seem possible for this situation to improve even slightly in the following weeks. Because the reviews for the movie are also pretty bad. Borderlands, which has a MetaCritic score of 27 and a Rotten Tomatoes score of 9% as of today, has already taken its place among the worst game adaptations of all time with its critic scores.
Of course, there are many reasons why the film failed so much, but perhaps the biggest responsible for this failure is the studio. It was Lionsgate’s first mistake to hand over this movie, which actually had potential on paper because it was adapted from a popular series like Borderlands, to a director like Eli Roth, who had no successful work other than the Hostel movies. The studio, which was not satisfied with Eli Roth’s work, intervened in the director’s work and made significant changes in the film. At one point, ties with Eli Roth were completely severed and Tim Miller (Deadpool) was brought in to complete additional shooting for the film. As if this were not enough, interventions continued during the editing phase. Borderlands, which was originally designed as an 18+ age film, was cut to a 13+ age limit during the editing phase. The result was one of the biggest fiascos of recent years.
