They will also receive special discounts on vehicle purchasing, charging, maintenance and financing.
The collaboration between the two brands aims to make environmentally friendly transportation more accessible and reduce emissions from ride-hailing. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi underlined the contribution of Uber drivers who use electric vehicles to the nature. Accordingly, he said that due to increased vehicle usage, it will save up to four times carbon compared to a normal driver.
BYD will also work with Uber to integrate its electric vehicles with autonomous driving technologies. Companies plan to develop autonomous electric models especially for ride-hailing networks.
“Together with Uber, we want to advance the electrification of mobility globally,” BYD CEO Stella Li said in a statement. “This collaboration marks an exciting next phase in our mission to promote sustainable transportation solutions.”
The deal does not include the United States, where Uber has previously partnered with Tesla. But it will significantly expand BYD and Uber’s network internationally. BYD surpassed Tesla as the world’s largest electric car manufacturer with its sales last year.
