On the other hand, Teofilo Reyes from Restaurant Opportunities Centers United, a labor group working to increase minimum wages in New York, said the following about this practice:

”It is extremely worrying that they are finding ways to outsource these jobs to another country, as this could lead to a serious reduction in wages in the sector.”

According to data provided by Fortune magazine, the Philippines is home to the world’s largest outsourcing industry. The Southeast Asian country generates $35.4 billion in revenue annually.

Chi Zhang, the owner of the company, stated that he had to close the restaurant he opened in Brooklyn in 2015 due to the pandemic. Stating that he had difficulty finding restaurant employees during the Covid epidemic, the investor said that the idea of ​​​​the virtual cashier application was shaped by this experience.

Another social media user stated that the same application is also available in Uruguay and Argentina.

Zhang stated that they started the virtual cashier service in October. The app is available in Queens, Manhattan and Staten Island in New York City. It was also reported that a restaurant in New Jersey is collaborating with the Happy Cashier company.

Japanese restaurant chains Sansan Ramen and Sansan Chicken, as well as Chinese businesses such as Yaso Kitchen, also use this service. Fortune and NYT noted that there are two other Chinese restaurants in Staten Island that work with Happy Cashier, but the businesses requested their names be kept secret.
