OpenAI has started offering ChatGPT’s Enhanced Voice Mode, which it introduced during the GPT-4o launch in May, to some Plus subscribers. However, according to a new statement by OpenAI, the full version of this feature is expected to be available to users by the end of the year.
As noted on Reddit’s ChatGPT subreddit, a new message appears in the ChatGPT app saying “We have started rolling out Enhanced Audio Mode.” OpenAI offers this feature by “gradually including users in the alpha version to ensure the quality of the user experience.”
This development can be considered promising news for those who expect ChatGPT to be the world’s smartest voice assistant. However, a statement at the end of the message shows that users should continue to wait. “All Plus users will have access before the end of the fall.” The statement increases the uncertainty that everyone will have access during the “autumn” period mentioned in the previous time display.
ChatGPT Advanced Voice Mode will be available to users with its full version
Technically, the full launch of this new feature, which will include the ability to create customizable character voices or serve as live translators, will happen sometime between late September and late December. Although it may be an earlier date than the meteorological ‘autumn’ statement, it may be a more realistic statement that it will be available to all Plus users “by the end of 2024”.
Unfortunately, the only thing to do to get this feature is to wait. OpenAI says “we will notify you when you are involved.” Still, with some Plus subscribers claiming to have the feature, there may be real-life examples showing what ChatGPT’s next-generation audio mode can do.
In a post on the X platform, OpenAI stated that the delay of ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode is due to security reasons. He stated that he spent time improving the model’s ability to detect and reject certain content.
Additionally, scaling the feature and maintaining the instantaneous response times seen in OpenAI’s demos is also an important factor. OpenAI said it spent extra time “improving the user experience and maintaining real-time responses as we scale our infrastructure to millions.”
OpenAI noted that there is always the possibility of delays, saying “exact timelines may vary based on our high security and reliability standards.” Regardless, we can expect these issues to be resolved in the coming weeks as some Plus users gain access to the feature.
Another reason for the delay is that OpenAI’s system resources may be strained at the moment. Because OpenAI also launched the beta launch of SearchGPT, which can rival Google. Users can join the waiting list for this search engine, but the full version of ChatGPT is likely to come after the advanced voice mode.
