Wu, who is the director of the Chinese Lunar Exploration Program as well as the newly established Deep Space Exploration Laboratory, said:Given the progress made worldwide, we are expected to be the first country to return samples from Mars” he said. Wu, the first senior Chinese space official to openly express such a prediction, also announced that China has started planning a project to build the world’s first Mars sample laboratory.
China and the United States are the only two countries that have made a soft landing on Mars, one of the few places in the Solar System where life could exist, making Mars an important target for exploration. NASA also hoped to bring Mars samples back to Earth around 2030. As it is known, the Perseverance rover has already collected a number of samples in tubes waiting to be collected on the surface of the planet. However, the estimated cost of this program has been increased from $4 billion to $11 billion in recent weeks, and the Mars Sample Return (MSR) mission has been plunged into uncertainty for now. According to independent research, even if NASA can provide the necessary budget, the samples are not expected to be brought to Earth until 2040. Now NASA is looking for a cheap way to bring Martian soil to Earth.
