Italy, which hosts well-established representatives of the automotive world, is concerned about the expansionist policy of Chinese brands, just like other EU countries. Chery establishing a factory here means strengthening its presence in Europe. On the other hand, it is known that the government wants to increase the number of local automobile production from approximately 800 thousand to around 1.3 million in 2023.
In line with this target, authorities continue their negotiations with Stellantis, the country’s only largest manufacturer, to increase its annual production to one million units by 2030. However, for the target of 1.3 million, a second company is needed to produce around 300 thousand cars per year. Industry Minister Adolfo Urso stated that they met with Tesla and three unnamed Chinese manufacturers last month for this purpose.
According to Reuters, BYD is among the Chinese manufacturers mentioned, but the company recently announced that it will establish its first factory in Europe in Hungary. Therefore, the idea of a second factory to be established in Italy does not seem very likely, at least for now. This makes Chery a strong option to increase Italy’s annual automobile production.
There is not much information yet, but sources close to the company state that Chery is evaluating strategic moves such as establishing a factory from scratch in Italy or renewing an existing factory. Moreover, Italy is not the only option on Chery’s mind. The former Nissan factory in Barcelona is also among the targets of this strategic move.
