However, a new process developed by researchers at the University of Tokyo could radically change this. This method, revealed in 2021, enables renewable concrete production and can produce concrete using materials obtained from demolished buildings and CO2 in the atmosphere. In this way, the damage to the environment is reduced and natural resources are protected.
This newly developed technology, “Calcium Carbonate Circulation System for Construction” (Calcium-carbonate circulation system for construction – C4S in short) is known by the name. This method produces calcium carbonate concrete using concrete obtained from demolished buildings and carbon dioxide in the air, instead of limestone used in traditional concrete production. This process greatly reduces greenhouse gas emissions because it eliminates the high heat treatments required in traditional concrete production.
While small and low-strength blocks were produced in the first attempts, larger and durable blocks were later created using concrete obtained from a school building. These produced concrete blocks are strong enough to be used in various areas such as residential construction and even pavement construction.
Researchers aim to further develop the potential of this renewable concrete technology. Their goal is to build a two-storey house using these concrete blocks by 2030. Additionally, many other companies are also looking at different ways to revolutionize the concrete industry. For example, there are companies that produce completely cement-free concrete.
