Cyber security experts have found that Deepseek popular artificial intelligence chat with Chinese origin contains a hidden code and this code has the potential to transmit user login information to China Mobile. This discovery brought serious concerns about data privacy and national security issues.
Does Deepseek carry data to China?
Deepseek, released in January 2025, has become the most downloaded application in the USA App Store in the USA. The application, which reached a large audience by leaving behind its competitors like chatgpt, has now been examined due to security vulnerabilities.
The Canadian -based ferroot Security company detected a complex hidden code on Deepseek’s web entry page. With the analysis of this code, it was understood that a connection to a infrastructure of China Mobile.
It was determined that the code in question was integrated into Deepseek’s account creation and login processes. Experts, this situation user data may be open to access to the Chinese government, he added.
Deepseek’s Privacy Policy confirms that user data are stored on servers in the People’s Republic of China. However, direct connection with the China Mobile shows that the application has a relationship closer to the Chinese state infrastructure than previous estimates. The United States had previously imposed limited sanctions against the company due to China Mobile’s connections with the Chinese state.
Ivan Tsarynny, CEO of Feroot Security, said that he has serious concerns about Deepseek’s code. In a statement on the issue, he stressed that China’s ability to surveillance of Americans is worrying. Tsarynny said that effective steps should be taken against such cyber threats.
University researchers Joel Reardon (University of Calgary) and Serge Egelman (University of California) also confirmed Deepseek’s connection with China Mobile. Researchers stated that they did not detect data transfer in test processes, but that this may be possible for certain users or login methods.
While users are increasingly sharing more sensitive information with artificial intelligence systems, the security deficits contained in Deepseek pose significant risks for data privacy. The fact that user data that may contain both personal information and commercial secrets is open to access to foreign governments is considered a serious security threat.
US officials are preparing a bill to prohibit Deepseek’s use of government devices. Representatives prepared by Darin Lahood and Josh Gottheimer will have a structure similar to the regulation that enabled Tiktok to be banned in state devices in 2022. With the US Navy and NASA institutions, Texas Province has already banned Deepseek. In addition, Australia, South Korea and Italy also prevented the use of the application in government systems.
