DJI introduced Flip, adding a new one to its innovative and frequently leaked drone models. Featuring large and protected propellers that can be folded downwards, DJI Flip offers features that will appeal to both beginners and experienced users. It attracts attention with a large sensor, 4K 100fps video shooting, security features, a three-axis gimbal and an affordable price.
DJI says the Flip “combines the ease of use of the Neo with the impressive photography capabilities of the Mini.” However, the Flip is superior to both models in many aspects. While the LiDAR system taken from the Air 3S model offers an impressive performance in detecting obstacles, the fully protected propellers take user safety to the highest level. The propeller protection structure is made of carbon fiber yarn and is 60 times lighter than polycarbonate material, but just as durable. In this way, Flip weighs under 249 grams and can be flown in most countries without requiring a permit.
Beginner users can easily use Flip by putting it down and choosing one of six different smart shooting modes. With modes such as Dronie and Boomerang, Flip shoots 4K 60fps videos by automatically taking off and avoiding obstacles. Experienced users can provide manual control with RC 2 or RC-N3 controllers. DJI’s FocusTrack technology allows tracking of users or objects with features such as ActiveTrack 4.0, Spotlight 2.0 and Point of Interest 3.0.
However, it is stated that Flip can only detect forward-facing obstacles and caution should be taken when flying backwards. Also, unlike the Neo model, it is not compatible with Goggles N3 and Motion 3 controllers.
Flip, which can reach a speed of 42 km/h when obstacle detection is disabled in Sport mode, can show limited performance in windy weather with its lightness and wide wingspan. Large propellers offer a quieter flight; This makes Flip ideal for events such as weddings and concerts.
Flip’s 83.5 gram batteries offer 34 minutes of flight time with their 3110 mAh capacity. Batteries can be charged quickly both on the drone and with the charger in the Fly More kit. Since there is no internal storage, a high-speed microSD card is needed.
Thanks to DJI’s O4 transmission system, Flip can transmit 1080p 60fps live video and reaches a range of approximately 13 km (USA) or 8 km (Europe). Smartphone control is only possible up to 50 meters via Wi-Fi.
How much should you pay for DJI Flip?
The Flip can shoot similar quality video and photos using the same 1/1.3 inch sensor as the Mini 4 Pro. While 100fps slow motion and HDR modes are supported in 4K, vertical shooting resolution is limited to 2.7K. This can be a disadvantage for social media content producers. Compared to competing models such as Flip, HoverAir, it stands out with its longer flight time and larger propellers.
DJI Flip offers more features and lower noise levels compared to the Neo model at a starting price of $439. A more comprehensive usage experience is provided with the Fly More kit option.
