We were saddened to learn that Kabosu, the cute Shiba Inu dog who inspired the world-famous cryptocurrency Dogecoin and gave rise to the Doge joke, has passed away. Kabosu’s owner, Atsuko Sato, stated in a post on Instagram that the dog passed away peacefully, in his sleep.
Doge became an internet phenomenon, an NFT, and even a cryptocurrency
Kabosu was a rescued dog in adulthood and was 18 years old when he passed away. The Japanese dog Kabosu not only inspired Dogecoin, but also became the source of much internet humor with his iconic photo in 2010.
Kabosu’s photo became an NFT and was sold for around $4 million. Although Dogecoin started as a joke, it is now the eighth most valuable cryptocurrency with a market value of $23 billion.
Dogecoin is a cryptocurrency supported by many famous names, especially Elon Musk. However, Musk’s statements during his SNL performance and subsequent accusations of deceiving investors and creating a pyramid scheme caused a huge decline in the value of the cryptocurrency.
While Dogecoin is stated to remain relatively stable, other memcoins (joke-based cryptocurrencies) are known to be quite volatile.
It is stated that a statue was erected in memory of Kabosu in Sakura, Japan, in November last year. Sato used Kabosu’s virality to donate more than $1 million to organizations like Save the Children. Kabosu’s death had a huge impact on both the cryptocurrency world and internet culture.
