In the January-July period of 2024, the Turkish automobile and light commercial vehicle market amounted to 672 thousand 18 units, with a slight increase of 0.1 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. During this period, automobile sales increased by 3.4 percent and reached 563 thousand 351 units, while the light commercial vehicle market decreased by 11.1 percent and remained at 135 thousand 667 units.
In July, there was a 17.5 percent contraction in the market compared to the same month of the previous year, and total sales amounted to 94 thousand 37 units. In this decline, automobile sales decreased by 16.04 percent and light commercial vehicle sales decreased by 22.2 percent.
Although the general view of the market is like this, a more positive picture emerges when we compare July sales with 10-year averages. While the automobile and light commercial vehicle market increased by 43.2 percent in total, this rate was 43.8 percent for the automobile market and 41.1 percent for the light commercial vehicle market.
One in every 2 cars is C segment! The leaders of the market are SUVs
When we examine the automobile market by segments, we see that segments A, B and C, which stand out with their low tax advantages, constitute 87.3 percent of the total market. While C segment cars took the lead with sales of 298 thousand 779 units and a share of 55.7 percent, B segment cars ranked second with 166 thousand 928 units and a share of 31.1 percent.
SUV cars were at the top among body types with a sales figure of 296 thousand 786 units and a market share of 55.3 percent. SUVs were followed by sedans with a 26.3 percent share and 141 thousand 195 sales, and H/B cars with a 17.2 percent share and 92 thousand 253 sales.
When we look at engine type preferences, we see that gasoline cars still remain popular. While gasoline car sales reached a market share of 65.2 percent with 349 thousand 583 units, hybrid car sales achieved a 14.8 percent share with 79 thousand 525 units.
Diesel cars, on the other hand, had a share of 10.9 percent with sales of 58 thousand 334 units. There was a remarkable increase in electric car sales. Reaching a sales figure of 45 thousand 342 units, electric cars constituted 8.5 percent of the market. In other words, hybrid and electric sales make up 23.3 percent of the market.
When we detail the electric car market, we see that sales of electric cars under 160 kW make up 7.1 percent of the market, with a huge increase of 186 percent, and sales of electric cars above 160 kW make up 1.3 percent, with an increase of 10.5 percent.
When we evaluate it according to engine volume, sales of cars under 1600cc represent 75.9 percent of the market, while a limited market share was achieved with shares of 0.6 percent and 0.2 percent in sales of cars between 1600-2000cc and above 2000cc, respectively.
In terms of emission levels, cars between 100-120 g/km had a share of 26.3 percent with sales of 141 thousand 10 units, followed by cars between 120-140 g/km with 138 thousand 464 units and a share of 25.8 percent.
Finally, the overwhelming superiority of cars with automatic transmission draws attention. Automatic transmission cars, which reached a market share of 90.4 percent with sales of 485 thousand 96 units, were followed by cars with manual transmission with 51 thousand 255 units and a share of 9.6 percent.
