A study found that 35 major US companies paid more to their five most senior executives than they did in federal income taxes between 2018 and 2022, the Guardian reported. Findings from the Institute for Policy Research and Americans for Tax Fairness are even less shocking when you learn the worst offenders:
Tesla.
Elon Musk‘s company earned $4.4 billion in the last five years and gave its executives $2.5 billion. Despite this, Tesla not only did not pay any federal taxes, but also received a $1 million refund from the government. Musk is the second richest person in the world, with Forbes reporting that he had a net worth of $207.9 billion in early March.
Tesla, one of 35 companies that paid less in federal income taxes during that period than it paid to its five top executives. In total, the deserving and not-at-all-greedy executives of these companies earned $9.5 billion in revenue in these years, while the same companies received back a cumulative $1.8 billion from the government. 18 of these businesses reported net profits over five years but did not pay a dime of federal income taxes.
In the study TeslaIn addition to , other important companies such as T-Mobile, Netflix, Ford Motor and Match Group are also listed. T-Mobile earned $17.9 billion, paid executives $675 million and received $80 million in refunds. Netflix actually paid some taxes, but the $236 million it paid was only 1.6% of its $15.1 billion in earnings, and that was just over a third of what it paid five top executives. The legal rate of federal income tax is 21%.
