Hondaannounced that it will withdraw from the motorcycle market under 50 cc as of 2025. The first shared development regarding the reason for the decision is that it is due to the strict emission regulations that will come into force in Japan in 2025.
Japan aims to reduce emissions of motorcycles and mopeds with engines under 50cc. Adding catalytic converters to small capacity engines is seen as a difficult task for the company in terms of both technical and cost.
Likewise, the recent proliferation of e-bikes has caused the sales of small mopeds to decrease. According to Nikkei Asia, 92,824 mopeds were sold last year, compared to over 2.78 million back in 1982.
Models such as the Super Cub, which is a large part of Honda’s range in this sector, will no longer be produced with this decision of the company. Super Cub, which has been produced more than 110 million times since its introduction, was one of the best-selling models.
In addition, the additional parts required to comply with new emissions laws will increase the prices of small-capacity motorcycles to almost the same level as large-capacity 125cc motorcycles, eliminating the possibility of cheaper transportation.
Honda currently continues to sell mopeds under 50 cc such as Super Cub, Cross Cub, Benly scooter and CRF50F, but when the accumulated stocks run out, we will no longer be able to access the new versions of these products. The company also doesn’t want to kill the Super Cub brand, so larger capacity models like the Super Cub C125 will continue to be offered in the future.
