Among PvP games, games called “extraction shooters” have become popular recently, instead of the battle royale genre. In these games, players start the game with certain equipment, collect loot and try to survive and escape. The gameplay loop is quite fun and has been implemented in various ways in different games. These games include games such as “Escape From Tarkov”, which draws attention with its challenging conditions, and “Hunt Showdown” with its haunted swamp theme. Even Call of Duty tried this genre for a short time. However, a new game needs to offer something different to stand out in this competitive genre, and Sharkmob’s “Exoborne” game has a remarkable feature at this point.
Exoborne’s best feature shouldn’t be described as a hidden gem or a secret weapon, because it offers a very distinct advantage. The game drops players into an open world set in a future where climate change is accelerating and getting worse as it waits to be resolved. In this world, vast green areas and huge man-made structures coexist. These ruined structures contain the materials necessary for survival. The game takes place in a post-apocalyptic environment and players control armored soldiers and try to survive by collecting different equipment. Played from a third-person perspective, this game may seem like a visually impressive but ordinary experience.
But what sets Exoborne apart is its impressive weather systems. Reminiscent of Just Cause 4 but even more visually impressive, this game takes place in a large PvPvE world filled with tornadoes, lightning and heavy rains. These weather conditions can appear suddenly and completely change the course of the game. For example, situations may occur when a team of three people driving an SUV full of loot is blown away by a hurricane and thrown to the other side of the map. Such detailed and impressive physics systems would have been impossible in a video game a decade ago. However, now, while such elements are difficult even on very powerful computers, it has been reported that the game will also come to consoles. Since I haven’t tried the game myself, I’m concerned about how it will perform on consoles and lower-end PCs, as what I saw looked pretty demanding and gorgeous.
Players can use various armor equipment to resist these chaotic weather conditions. These equipment function as Exoborne’s character classes and provide different advantages. For example, one piece of equipment allows players to survive the hurricane, while another strategy allows players to fly through the storm using their glider, which is always ready to get caught up in the hurricane. In this case, if they are skilled enough, they can quickly reach their goal by storm or launch an air strike against an unexpected enemy team in the open world.
Besides the glider and weapons, there is also a grappling hook that players can use. This grappling hook can pull players towards their target, providing a huge advantage in both combat and mobility. In this context, there is more than one reason why I mention Just Cause 4.
There are other important elements that Sharkmob needs to work on, too, and some of them—like the overall progression cycle—are elements that I couldn’t see much of while trying out the game. Since I haven’t experienced how the weapons feel, it’s hard to make a definitive judgment about the game. However, in this competitive genre where games can rise or fall overnight, Exoborne at least stands out by offering one innovative feature.
