The Galaxy Z Flip series, in which Samsung has brought great innovations in the foldable phone world, may come to the fore with a significant change next year. Z Flip models, which have been powered by Snapdragon processors so far, can allegedly switch to the Exynos 2500 chipset in the Galaxy Z Flip 7 foldable phone. However, this change may not meet users’ expectations in terms of performance and experience. In particular, it is curious how this situation will be shaped by the position of the new chipset against the Snapdragon 8 Elite and the Exynos problems experienced in the past.
Samsung’s Exynos 2500 chipset was originally designed for the Galaxy S25 series. However, due to the low efficiency of Samsung Foundry’s 3nm manufacturing process, this chipset was not used in the Galaxy S25 series and Snapdragon 8 Elite was integrated into the entire series. Now it is claimed that Exynos 2500 may be included in the hardware of Galaxy Z Flip 7. Moreover, not only the Z Flip 7, but also the Galaxy Z Flip FE model, which is a more affordable alternative, is on the agenda to be released with the same chipset. This indicates that Samsung is following a different cost strategy in the foldable phone segment.
Improvements in the 3nm manufacturing process made production of the Exynos 2500 possible. However, these improvements do not eliminate all concerns about chipset performance and thermal management issues. If the Exynos 2500 falls behind in critical areas such as speed, battery life, and efficiency compared to the Snapdragon 8 Elite, user satisfaction could be severely affected. The consequences of Samsung’s decision will be followed carefully, especially in this segment where technology lovers have high expectations.
Savings on hardware may impact user experience
The fact that the Galaxy Z Flip FE comes with the Exynos 2500 chipset shows that Samsung is turning to a cost-oriented approach. However, this may result in savings on other hardware components. Features such as lower resolution screens, weak camera systems or lower capacity batteries may negatively affect the experience users receive from the device. Such changes may not match user expectations, especially in the flagship phone category.
However, whether the Exynos 2500 is optimized for foldable devices is another important question mark. If the chipset is not designed to meet the specific requirements of foldable phones, performance problems may occur. Such a scenario could overshadow Samsung’s leadership in the foldable phone market.
The Galaxy Z Flip 7 model is expected to be released in the second half of 2024. However, the fact that many devices with Snapdragon 8 Elite processors will be on the market on this date will make the performance of Exynos 2500 more clearly comparable. If the Exynos 2500 performs poorly against the Snapdragon 8 Elite, users may consider this a disappointment. The resurgence of past problems, especially regarding heating and battery efficiency, may pose a risk for Samsung.
