Popular password management app LastPasswarned its customers about a fake app that attempted to trick LastPass customers into using the fake app instead of the real one, using a similar name and icon.
Interestingly, the app called “LassPass Password Manager” was approved by Apple’s App Store review team, even though it appears to be clearly imitating the LastPass app.
Essentially, this fake app doesn’t use the exact same icon and its name is one letter different, but the similarities may have confused some LastPass users.
Beware of the Fake Application Named ‘LassPass’
It’s unclear whether the fake LassPass app is trying to steal login information from users, but it does have options for adding passwords, email accounts, addresses, bank accounts, credit cards, debit cards, and more. It does not require any LastPass login, but it is possible for the developer to see the information added to the application.
There’s also a “PRO” upgrade available that costs $1.99 per month, $9.99 per year, or $49.99 for a “lifetime” subscription, so the app’s main purpose may be to collect subscription money from users. Either way, LastPass users should be aware of the fake app and avoid using it.
Such fake applications are frequently seen on Android, but it is currently unknown how the App Store review team allowed this application.
