Instagram is working on a feature called “Friend Map”. Instagram’s Friend Map feature, first discovered by application researcher Alessandro Paluzzi, allows your friends to see where you are and where you have been, with all posts and stories tagged with a location added to the map screen.
In short, this feature, which is very similar to Snapchat’s Snap Map, will allow users to see their friends’ locations in real time. The company says the feature is an internal prototype and has not been tested externally.
The optional functionality can show both live location and past visits, depending on your settings. Users can choose which friends can see their maps.
Friend Map will allow users to leave text messages or “Notes” on the map for others to see. Instagram Notes are currently text messages that appear directly at the top of the messaging feed, but if Friend Map launches, users will have the option to post these short updates on the map. The notes function on the map can be used to do things like inform your friends about a fun pop-up shop you came across or a new restaurant you’re currently eating at.
Instagram also acquired the stories feature from Snapchat in 2016. If Friend Map leaves the testing phase and is implemented, this will be another feature that Instagram gets from Snapchat.
Instagram confirmed to TechCrunch that the feature is still in the internal testing phase. It is currently unclear when the feature will go live.
