HBO shared the first images from the highly anticipated second season of The Last of Us series. HBO included The Last of Us in a short sequence in a comprehensive trailer, thus it is possible to get an idea about the new season that will be broadcast in 2025.
The trailer begins with Joel (Pedro Pascal) chatting with a new character played by Catherine O’Hara (ostensibly his therapist). As Joel comes to terms with his past actions, the therapist asks, “Did you hurt him?” He answers the question, “I saved him.”
Aside from O’Hara’s unknown role, we also see other characters for the first time, including Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby, Jeffrey Wright’s reprise of his video game voice as Isaac, and Isabela Merced’s Dina. Meanwhile, Joel’s brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) make brief appearances during some intense action scenes.
The second season of The Last of Us will cover some of the events in the second game of the series. Producers Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann decided to split the game into two seasons because the story was more complex compared to the first game. Therefore, while the second season will feature seven episodes, the third season will be “significantly longer.”
The Last of Us will make minor changes to the original story in the new season
Although the series generally followed the events of the game in the first season, some clever changes were made. The second season will have a similar structure. In the play, Joel only confesses the events that took place in the hospital to his brother, but here he tells Catherine O’Hara’s character.
The trailer was released as part of HBO’s Coming to Max trailer, alongside the first trailers for The Penguin, Dune: Prophecy, It: Welcome to Derry, and Game of Thrones’ next spinoff series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
