Fitbit Agreed to Pay Fine for Overheating of Its Smartwatches
A few years ago, Fitbit Ionic users complained that their watches were overheating, causing burns in some cases. The company released a software update to fix this issue in 2020. However, this did not provide a solution and burn cases continued. As the number of companies increased, the case was taken to court.
The CPSC stated that Fitbit failed to report this dangerous issue in a timely manner and acted unlawfully. The agency has identified at least 115 cases of overheating in the United States. These cases resulted in 78 burn injuries. These include two cases of third-degree burns and four cases of second-degree burns.
Due to the seriousness of the problem, Fitbit decided to recall Ionic watches in March 2022. The investigation into the matter was finally concluded. Fitbit agreed to pay a $12.25 million fine. It is estimated that a similar payment was made to the victimized users.
