Former Apple employee Xiaolang Zhang was sentenced to 6 months in prison and $146,984 in compensation for stealing information about the company’s unmanned autonomous car project. Zhang was captured when he was going to China from San Jose International Airport in 2018 and was interrogated for a long time on allegations of espionage. Although he denied all the accusations against him for a long time, he eventually could not stand the pressure and confessed his crime in 2022.
He’s not the first Apple employee to steal
It has been on the agenda before that some former employees of the company used the information they had for malicious purposes. It was revealed that Xiaolang Zhang worked as a hardware engineer at Apple and was involved in the company’s special autonomous car project called Project Titan.
As a result of Apple’s investigation, it was revealed that Zhang transferred the 25-page secret autonomous project design to his wife’s computer and also took a copy of the project’s user manual. Zhang, whom no one suspected at first, attracted all suspicions when he suddenly resigned and started working at the Chinese autonomous car company XPeng Motors, and the investigation began.
Zhang will be imprisoned for 6 months on June 19. Considering that the first case filed against him stipulated a 10-year sentence, it can be said that this sentence even pleased Zhang. The fact that similar cases are becoming more common has prompted Silicon Valley companies to take action. Companies are demanding harsher penalties to deter such thefts.
