France is preparing to take harsh steps in the digital area against the US’s new customs tariffs. After US President Donald Trump’s decision to increase import taxes, the fluctuation in the global markets accelerated the preparations for the European Union.
France will retaliate to US technology giants
French Economy and Finance Minister Eric Lombard announced that various regulations targeting the activities of American technology companies in Europe are on the agenda. The Minister said that the administrative regulations related to data use can be strengthened and that some activities are also on the table.
This statement is considered as part of retaliation plans discussed in the European Union, which was previously brought up by a French government spokesman. EU officials say that currently unpaid digital services can be covered.
This output of France directly concerns technology giants such as Apple, Amazon, Google, Meta and Microsoft. Most of these companies’ revenues in Europe are managed through Ireland -based structures.
However, Ireland opposes the arrangements proposed by France. Dublin administration argues that additional taxes and restrictions on digital services will disrupt the European domestic market and lead to a decrease in foreign investments.
European Commission President Ursula von Der Leyen said that all measures will be evaluated against the US trade war initiated. Although the European Union gives a more than 157 billion euros in property trade, it will be faced with an account of 109 billion euros in service trade.
This painting has made the technology sector a possible target for the trade balance. So what do you think about this? You can share your opinions with us in the comments section below.
