Google highlighted the “long context windows” capabilities of the Gemini 1.5 Pro model, which it announced in February. The company claimed, for example, that it could provide detailed information about the 402-page Apollo 11 mission transcript. Now, Deep Research, a tool where these features can be used in daily life, has been introduced. Starting today, Gemini Advanced users will be able to create comprehensive and easy-to-read reports on complex topics with this new tool.
Aarush Selvan, senior product manager from the Gemini team, introduced the Deep Research tool to Engadget. At first glance, this tool offers a similar experience to other AI chatbots. The user starts the process by entering a query. For example, a scenario was shown during a demo in which Selvan asked Gemini to research scholarship programs for students looking to enter public service. However, here the tool follows a different path than other chat bots.
Before answering a question, Gemini creates a multi-stage research plan and waits for this plan to be approved by the user. For example, if you are requesting a report on heat pumps, you can specify in the research plan that government incentives be prioritized or that this information be excluded altogether. Once user confirmation is received, Gemini crawls the open web for information related to the query. This process may take several minutes. According to Selvan, in user tests, most people expressed a willingness to wait this period due to the quality of the detailed reports obtained.
The tool can create multi-page reports on a topic such as research on scholarship programs, and the reports are supported by graphs. Additionally, links and quotations to the sources used throughout the report are also presented in detail. Selvan stated that the Deep Research tool benefits from Google Search’s authority determination signals. However, he added that the quality of the sources obtained may vary depending on the difficulty of the query. A more complex question may trigger a turn to more authoritative sources. The user can easily transfer the prepared report to Google Docs.
Those who want to use the Deep Research tool must purchase Google’s One AI Premium Plan subscription. This plan also includes access to Gemini Advanced and costs $20 per month. A free trial opportunity is offered for the first month. The tool, which is currently available only in English, may appeal to a wider user base in the future.
This new tool from Google stands out as an important solution in providing clear answers to complex questions. Especially for professionals and researchers who need detailed information, Deep Research can be an effective aid.
