Google started offering the first set of Cross-Device Services, which it announced at the end of May, on Android devices with Call Broadcast and Instant Hotspot features. These innovations aim to provide users with a more seamless and integrated experience across their devices.
When these new features come to your device, you need to follow these steps to enable them: Settings > Google > Devices and Sharing > Cross Device Services. The setup process involves creating a “device group” by enabling these preferences on signed-in devices.
Call Broadcast allows calls to be moved between other nearby devices signed in with a Google Account. However, this feature is limited to certain apps only. When switching between calls, some device data can be shared with these applications. Currently, this feature is only available with Google Meet, and the Cast branding is being reused in this context. There’s a Cast icon to move a video call between your Android phone, tablet, or desktop browser.
Instant Hotspot enables automatic sharing of internet access between devices. This feature works with Chromebooks and Android devices signed in to a Google Account. However, Bluetooth and device location must be turned on for tethering. Internet sharing cannot be used with this feature on Samsung devices. For these devices, the automatic personal hotspot feature comes into play.
There’s a toggle that allows each feature to be turned on or off, and Google displays device groups on the main screen of the Cross-Device Services page. Currently, these services appear on Android devices running Google Play services version 24.28.34, and this version is still in beta. These features are available for phones and tablets with Android 11 and above.
Google states that Android users will receive the new cross-device features as soon as they are released. Thanks to these innovations, users will be able to manage their connections more efficiently by having a seamless experience between their devices. Android users will be able to continue their work and communication more effectively by switching between devices faster and easier.
The conveniences these innovations will bring to daily life will take the user experience to the next level. Users, especially those with a busy work schedule, will have the opportunity to use their devices more effectively with these features. At the same time, continuous updating and development of these services aims to increase user satisfaction by preserving the dynamic structure of the Android ecosystem.
This step by Google shows its progress in improving user experience and strengthening cross-device integration. With these innovations, Android users will be able to use their devices more efficiently and manage their daily lives and business processes more smoothly.
