Google introduces password sharing for family members

Google’s Password Manager now allows password sharing with family members, albeit on a limited basis. As Google states in its support document, thanks to this new feature, you can securely share your passwords with your family group in Google Password Manager. The passwords you share will be available and ready to use in your family members’ Google Password Manager.

This feature was first announced in February 2024 as part of Safer Internet Day, but is finally rolling out with the May 2024 Google Play Services update v24.20. Since password sharing is limited to members in the family group only, you will need to create a family group and add members to use this feature.

If you have a family group, a “share” button option will appear in Google’s Password Manager. However, as Android Authority points out, this feature may not be enabled in the desktop version of Chrome yet.

Previously, Google shared examples of the use of this feature. For example, two members of a family can use this feature when coordinating child care through a single account or allowing a parent to access a child’s schoolwork.

Features of Google’s Password Manager

Password Storage: Google Password Manager securely stores all your passwords and syncs them with your Google account. This way, you can access the same passwords on different devices.

Creating a Password: It offers an integrated password generator to create secure passwords. This feature helps you create strong and hard-to-guess passwords.

Password Autofill: Automatically fills in your saved passwords across websites and apps, making logging in faster and easier.

Password Sharing: If you create a family group, you can share your passwords securely with family members. Shared passwords are also stored and available for use in family members’ Google Password Manager.

Safety Warnings: It warns about weak, duplicate, or leaked passwords and offers suggestions for improving security.
