Google Messages will allow you to chat with Gemini. Thanks to this new feature, you will be able to draft messages, generate ideas, plan events or just have a fun chat.
Gemini will appear as a new conversation in Google Messages. Google Messages Gemini is powered by Gemini 1.0 Pro, which was previously used on different devices, and has been adapted for phones to offer less robot-like responses.
In addition to creating text, Gemini will also be able to create images when given a specific request. Google Workspace (Gmail, Drive, and Docs) will also support Gemini Extensions that provide access to Maps, Flights, Hotels, and YouTube. You’ll also be able to upload images and query via Google Messages Gemini, but voice notes are disabled in these chats.
Example requests include:
•I haven’t contacted my friend for a long time. Help me design a short message to reconnect and check in.
•Suggest an impressive yet simple 3-course dinner menu for someone who cooks. Let it be vegetarian.
•I’m going to a social event where I know almost no one. Suggest a few interesting conversation starters.
To evaluate Gemini answers, just long press on an answer. Chat with Gemini happens over RCS, but there is no end-to-end encryption. So, you’re just interacting with Google.
If you turn off Gemini App Activity, chats are only saved for 72 hours. The feature will launch in open beta for a small percentage of users this week. To use it, you must sign up for the Google Messages beta and be over 18 years old.
