According to the Financial Times, this investment will be an independent deal from the $2 billion funding round led by Lightspeed Venture Partners in January, which increased the company’s value to approximately $60 billion. The company previously had a $2 billion investment commitment in Anthropic. With the new investment, Google’s contribution will exceed 3 billion dollars. Amazon doubled its stake in the artificial intelligence company to $8 billion late last year.
Anthropic, which has annual revenue of about $875 million, sells access to its models directly and through third-party cloud services, including Amazon Web Services. On the other hand, developing large language language models requires the best talent as well as expensive computing. OpenAI, the pioneer of this field, completed a $6.6 billion financing round in October, increasing its value to $157 billion, but the company has not yet been able to make a profit like others. This shows how high the costs and financing need are.
