A person who allegedly sent dozens of messages containing death threats to Nintendo was sentenced to one year in prison.
According to Japan’s leading news sources, 27-year-old Kenshin Kazama was tried for sending 39 threatening messages targeting company employees via Nintendo’s website, using the form on the website.
Experienced Failure in Online Games
The messages Kazama sent included statements such as “I will make you regret bringing such a terrible game to the world” and “I will kill everyone involved in this.” These threats were carried out between August and November last year.
Due to the threats, Nintendo had to cancel the Splatoon Koshien 2023 National Finals to be held in December and the Nintendo Live Tokyo 2024 event planned to be held in January. The company stated that it made this decision to ensure the safety of its employees and participants.
In the case heard at the Kyoto District Court, Kazama’s defense that he was under stress due to the failures he experienced in online games and that this situation pushed him to threaten himself was not accepted. The court deemed Kazama’s crime “malicious” and sentenced him to one year in prison and four years of supervised release.
