Cem Bey stated that the average internet speed in Turkey is around 40 megabits and that this is one of the lowest speeds in Europe. In particular, two-thirds of fixed broadband internet users still receive service with old copper lines, while only one-third use fiber internet. The expansion of fiber infrastructure is of great importance for Turkey to achieve its speed targets. Cem Bey emphasized that fiber infrastructure offers an environmentally friendly, less energy consuming and more efficient internet experience. However, this transformation requires large investments and a long time period.
Stating that it will take years for fiber internet to reach households in Turkey, Mr. Cem stated that serious investment and support is required to expand fiber infrastructure in Turkey, which is a country of 26.5 million households. Pointing out that fiber internet and 5G technology will work more efficiently, Çelebiler said that this infrastructure will lead to major changes in daily life. Users will be able to perform all kinds of operations without any problems, from watching videos to uploading files, with uninterrupted and fast internet. Additionally, data storage with cloud services will become more common instead of storing over the internet.
TurkNet CEO stated that the number of connected devices in homes is increasing rapidly and this number will exceed 20 in the coming years. He said that today, every device in the home, from televisions to refrigerators, is connected to the internet and each needs a separate IP address. This makes high-speed internet mandatory.
Stating that the internet infrastructure is not yet sufficiently developed in many villages and rural areas, Mr. Cem stated that TurkNet is willing to invest in providing internet to these areas, but bureaucratic obstacles and infrastructure investments still create difficulties. He pointed out that the plans and investments of other operators also constitute a significant obstacle in this process.
Çelebiler also said that the internet is of great importance in terms of the equality of opportunity it offers to society, and that especially in developing countries, the internet is a critical tool to compete at the same level with the world. He also underlined the contribution of fiber technology to a greener future. In this context, he stated that TurkNet will continue to invest in environmentally friendly and sustainable internet infrastructures.
