Huawei is preparing to take steps that will push the limits in electric vehicle charging technologies. Huawei executives shared their vision and goals for electric vehicle charging at a recent conference in China.
Huawei’s Head of Digital Energy, Hou Jinlong, stated during the conference that all electric vehicles should soon switch to high-voltage charging so that charging speeds can be reduced to short periods such as buying fuel.
The striking detail in the manager’s speech was that Huawei wanted to expand its charging station network and increase charging speeds to the “1 kilometer with 1 second charge” band. Jinlong said that in this way, they can revolutionize the electric vehicle charging industry and eliminate users’ range anxiety.
Although the cost of ultra-high-speed charging stations may make some charging station network operators think, Huawei emphasizes that the main focus should be on the cost per kWh rather than the initial investment cost. The Chinese company is working to provide electric vehicle owners with a safe and efficient charging experience by investing in battery safety technology and optimizing the charging process.
Huawei recently introduced a liquid-cooled ultra-fast charging station to meet the need for high-speed charging. This charging station, with a maximum output power of 600 kW and a maximum current of 600A, can reach a charging speed of approximately one kilometer per second. The charging station supports a wide range of electric vehicles, including popular models from brands such as Nio, Tesla, Xpeng and Li Auto, as well as commercial vehicles and cargo trucks.
The company plans to “take the lead in installing more than 100,000 liquid-cooled stations in more than 340 cities and major highways in China.”
The electricity grid faces significant challenges as demand for electricity from charging networks continues to grow. However, Huawei sees integrating renewable energy generation, energy storage and charging infrastructure as a viable solution. This integration will enable bi-directional energy flow, allowing vehicle owners to charge their cars and sell excess energy back to the grid.
